Sutapa Awon Pradhan is one of Indias most talented Bharatnatyam dancers of the younger generation. The essence of purity in presentation and Sutapa’s devotion and dedication to her chosen art from make her performances unique. Though rooted in tradition, her performances are contemporary and fresh and highly appreciated by dance lovers and critics all over the world. Sutapa has also shown her talents in the field of Indian Classical Music, both as a vocalist and as an instrumentalist, playing the sitar with proficiency.

Qualification in the field

She began dancing at the age of six, later she was under the guidance of Guru Abhoy Pal ( Lecturer of Rabindra Bharati University). She has also had the privilege of receiving intensive training from the Guru Dhananjayans at Bharata Kalanjali, Chennai. Though Bharatnatyam continues to be her first love, she is also trained in the Odissi Classical Dance from and the Martial Art form Orrissa – Mayurbhanj Chhau. She has also received extensive training in the Folk Dance forms of Bengal at SARABHUJ, Midnapur, under Dr.Tarun Pradhan. To improve her dance presentations, she has participated in specialized workshops under Dr.Padma Subramanium (Natya Sastra and Abhinaya Darpan), Kalanidhi Narayanan (Abhinaya in Classical Dance), Mandakini Trivedi (Dance appreciation) and Dr.Kanak Rele (Abhinaya, Nayak- Nayika Bhed). She is absorbed in tireless endeavor for collection of Indian Folk dance & their authentic music tunes, costumes & language of Songs. Already she has made a big collection of rare masks & musical Instruments. Her main inspiration for this works is her husband Dr. TARUN PRADHAN.

Major Performance in India

2000 : I perfomed in Koothambalam production like Natyasastra and Manashamangal, Nabami Nishira (Dance drama on Durga). Performed Natyasastra in Kalamandalam dance festival (Calcutta) organized by Guru Smt. Thankumani Kutti.
2000 : Participated in solo Bharatnatyam Recital, Biswa Buunga Sanmalan, in Calcutta.
2000 : I played the praiseworthy role in several dance drama in folk from like “Amar Desh”, “Nakshi Kathar Math” etc.
2001 : Participated in classical conference in Balasore(Orissa) organized by Renowned organization Sadhana.
2001 : Performed in Delhi at Sreeram Center Auditorium, organized by Sahitya Kala parishad.
2001 : In 18th October at Sisir Manch my solo performance was organized by E.Z.C.C.
2001 : Performed in New Delhi at President House organized by I.C.C.R.
2002 : Performed Prativa Utsav at Aikatan Cultural Complex (Kolkata) organized by EZCC in April.
2002 : Solo Bharatnatyam Recital at Padatik Little Theatre organized by Padatik & Anamika Kala Sangam.
2002 : Performed in R.R. SABHA & RUKMINI DEVI ARUNDEL FOUNDATION in CHENNAI with Sujata Ramalingam of Kalakhatra.
2003 : Solo Bharatnatyam recital at Rabindra Sadan (Kolkata) organized by West Bengal Dance Group Federation,(W.B.D.G.F).
2003 : Solo Bharatnatyam recital at Rabindra Sadan (Kolkata) organized by Sarabhuj(A leading Folk Dance & Theatre Troup).
2003 : Directed & Choreographed in a Bharatnatyam & Orissi combined programme (Melbandhan) at District Town (Midnapore) organized by Sarabhuj & Nrityalok and also choreographed & performed in contemporary item ‘MUKTI’.
2003 : Performed Maurbhanj Chow organized by Kharagpur I.I.T.
2004 : Performed in Guahati with my group at SRIMANTA SANKARDEV KALAKSHETRA SOCIETY sponsored by E.Z.C.C.
2004 : Group Bharatnatyam performance at Rabindra Sadan (Kolkata) organized by West Bengal Dance Group Federation,(W.B.D.G.F) in February under my direction.
2004 : Performed in Bharatnatyam dance drama organize by ‘Nabi Mumbai Tamil Sangam’(Mumbai).
2004 : Solo Bharatnatyam in 56 year celebration of Theatre Troop ‘BAHURUPI’.

2009 : Performance of Bharatnatyam through choreography with fifty folk artist for inauguration of SHILP GRAM at SANTINIKATA organized by E.Z.C.C.
2010 : Make a new production MEGH BALIKA with the repertory artist of NRITYALOK.
2010 : Performance in folk dance drama ORA KAJKARA, at Trivandam & Goa organized by Indian Rail Mantrak for the celibration of 150 years of gurudev RABINDRANATH TAGORE.
2010 : Nrityalok organized a DANCE DRAMA FESTIVAL at KOLKATA collaboration with Dept. of Culture, Govt. of India.
2011 : Chereography and Direction for Tagore's Natir Puja organized by I.C.C.R. (Kolkata), performed our group Nrityalok.
2012 : 'Natir Puja' organized by Nalanda University for the occasion of National Seminar the "Buddhist Heritage of Magadha" .
2013 : Solo Bharatnatyam in Uday Shankar Dance Festival Organized by West Bengal State Music Academy.
2013 : Prof. Karl Bardosh (Associate Arts Professor, New York University - TSOA, Kanbar Institute of Film and Fine Television, 721 Broadway, Room 914, New York, NY 10003) selected our dance drama production Rabindranath Tagore's Natir Puja for making a cultural & educational documentary for future generation and also is going to organize performances of our company in New Jersey & Florida in next summer June 2015.
2014 : Choreography for the 'Basanti Hey' organized by E.Z.C.C. for the celebration of Basanta Utsav.
2014 : Performed Natir Puja production in INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL organized by Utkal Yuva Sanskrutik Sangha (Cuttack).

2016 : MARCH:- New production Tagore's "KALMRIGAYA" with repartory artist has been choreographed for Annual programme of NRITYALOK . and music by KALYAN SEN BARAT.
2016 : AUGUST:- "NATIR PUJA " got award for the best cultural documentory of 2016 from "CANNE FILM FESTIVAL", Documentary by Professor KARL BARDOSH (NEWYORK), concept, choreography & costume by Sutapa Awon Pradhan,
2017 : March: Choreography Dance Festival organised by "Nrityalok" in collaboration with Ministry os Culture (Delhi). at NAZRUL MANCHA (KAMARHATI).
2017 : MAY-AUGUST: Dance Drama "KALMRIGAYA" & "NATIR PUJA " at Minarva, organised by Rabindra Mela Comitee.
2018 : Production "Natir Puja" has been selected for 8th theatre olympic 2018 at KAMANI on 22nd FEBRUARY,(DELHI).
2019 : JUNE, SEPT PROKRITI CHANDALIKA performed in Jaipur Jatis and VAISHAKHI Nrityadsab ,organised by NMDCA
2020 FEBRUARY : performed PRAKRITI CHANDALIKA at THANAY MUMBAI in UPAVAN FESTIVAL

2000 : Solo Bharatnatyam BANGLADESH, Dhaka, organized by Mahakal Natya Sayanstha.
2008 : Associate choreographer and performer with hundred folk artist for the celebration of sixty years independence of India INDIA @ 60, organized by Indian tourism & zonal cultural Centre at SINGAPORE.
2008 : Workshop on PATA JHUMUR, organized by DHAKA UNIVERSITY, Bharatnatyam performance at CHAYANAT.
2009 : Participated in 11 ASIA ARTS FESTIVAL at CHINA (Inner Mongolia), sponsored by I.C.C.R.
2009 : Conducted workshop on Folk Dances of INDIA for two months at MAHATMA GANDHI INSTITUTE, MAURITIUS, invited as a resource person from India. I performed Bharatnatyam there.
2010 : Bharatnatyam performance at SOUTH AFRIKA(PETRORIA & KEPTOWN) in World youth Festival.

Professional Experience

Choreographed in FOLK Theatre (Fulla Katur Pala) of BAHURUPI under the guidance of Trained in Karnataki vocal & Tagore Song. Educated in Tradition Bengal Folk Dance(RAIBANSHE, PAIKA, DHALI, PATA, JHUMUR) Tribal Dance (SARAP, BHUANG, KARAM). Learned Dhol & Dhamsa playing. Founded a dance Academy(NRITYALOK)in 2000 in Kolkata. The Group has already participated in various festival.Sutapa was the Assistant Choreographer of the Folk Dance Ensemble at the Incredible India @ 60 programme in Singapore, in 2008, organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, to mark 60 years of Indias independence. Sutapa excelled not only in her innovative choreography but also as a solo dancer.
